- Beard Balm - Everything you Need to Know
What is beard balm?
Beard balm is somewhere between a beard wax (which has a harder consistency and is designed to hold the beard) and a beard oil (which has an oily consistency and created to hydrate the beard). With a consistency more like Vaseline, the beard balm is designed to hydrate and hold the beard at the same time.
It tends to create a matte finish and is very malleable - without stiffening the beard to the extent it looks unnatural.
Who is beard balm for?
It's a matter of personal preference. Some might prefer a beard balm to oil or a wax. There is no need to use both balm and oil together.
Why use a beard balm?
Several factors can damage the beard: cold weather, hot water, air conditioning, wind and even some shampoos and conditioners. The beard balm helps keep the skin underneath the beard hydrated, repairs split ends and helps tame unruly hairs common with longer beards.
How to choose beard balm
The main ingredients usually present in beard balms are shea/cocoa butter (to hydrate), beeswax (to shape) and some essential oils (to give the fragrance and nutrients).
When buying a beard balm, do not purchase a beard balm that contains synthetic sealants like petroleum jelly, as it dries and irritates the skin.
